A roman d'aventure of the mid-13th c., woven loosely around the vida of Guilhem IX and exploiting names relating to the houses of Anjou and Poitiers in the 12th c. It recounts, without recourse to the marvellous, and using motifs known to the fabliaux, the cynical career of the count of Poitiers and his equally cynical squire, Robert, interlaced with personal reflections on love by the narrator.
