JPG is a magazine, published 6 times a year[2] by 8020 Publishing, which focuses on photography. The content of JPG is user-created and submitted via the magazine's website. JPG pays $100 for each photo published. When photos are submitted to the website, they are voted on by members of the site's community for inclusion in the next issue. Photos are separated by theme, with some themes being assigned to issues while some are not.

The magazine was originally self-published through lulu.com, but in 2006 this changed, with the magazine being a fully-fledged news-stand publication.

On January 2, 2009, JPG magazine announced that they were going to shut down operations on January 5, after running into cash-flow problems[3]. After a grass-roots effort started by 15x100's Struan Oglanby at savejpg.com, investor interest came to life as the official website enthusiastically acknowledged, thus offering new hope for the magazine, contributors and readers.

In February 2009 it was announced that new investors had acquired JPG magazine and were re-launching the print magazine, website and associated assets. However, by May 2009 there was no sign of a printed magazine, which is now scheduled for sometime this summer. New photography themes and members of staff have been announced on the JPG magazine blog.

Controversy

In May 2007, shortly before the release of Issue 10, founding editors and creators of JPG Magazine Derek Powazek and Heather Champ announced their departure. In a widely read and widely linked to post on his personal blog, Derek Powazek wrote about being forced out of JPG Magazine along with fellow co-founder Heather Champ and said 8020 Publishing CEO Paul Cloutier attempted to "revise the history" of JPG Magazine to minimize their contributions. The circumstances of their departure became a subject of intense online discussion, meriting widespread coverage on various technology and photography blogs and a discussion on Metafilter.
