Juan Caramuel de Lobkowitz

Spanish-born architectural theorist. He saw architecture as part of a vast system embracing all branches of knowledge, and his major work of theory was Architectura civil, recta y obliqua, considerada y dibuxada en el Templo de Ierusalem (1678–81), also published in Latin as Templum Salomonis… Solomon's temple was claimed as the fount from which all architecture sprang, and the book included much on mathematical-scientific problems: it was a considerable influence on Guarini. His only architectural work, however, was the façade of Vigevano Cathedral (1673–c.1680) in Northern Italy, an eclectic design showing some virtuosity in its geometrical relationship to the square.
