Juan de Álava

(c.1480–1537)

Spanish master-mason involved in the building of the Catedral Nueva at Salamanca (1512) and Seville Cathedral (1513). Later, he worked with members of the Colonia family at Plasencia Cathedral (notably around the crossing), and from 1521 he built the cloisters of Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, in the Plateresque style, which are among the largest and most beautiful in Spain. From 1524 he was engaged in building the Church of San Esteban at Salamanca (completed 1610), and was in charge of the works at Salamanca Cathedral from 1526. His work spans a late flowering of Gothic to early Renaissance styles.
