Review

Jubilation, the tenth studio album by the Band, showcases a group that has aged better than the finest port wine. Yes, although the voices have aged noticeably (particularly in the cases of Rick Danko and Levon Helm), this fact only makes the record more charming. The songwriting is still spiritual and evocative, and all of the tunes are peppered with a Grant Wood-ish plain-spoken sensibility that are at once familiar and instantly engaging.

The group (Danko, Helm, and resident keyboard genius Garth Hudson) are augmented by Richard Bell (keyboards), Randy Ciarlante (drums, vocals), and Jim Weider (guitar). The odd thing is that this version of the group has probably been together as long as the original Band. Guest appearances by Eric Clapton and John Hiatt are nice additions, but are not reasons to buy this album, as it holds up quite well on its own merits. ~ Matthew Greenwald, All Music Guide

Jubilation is the twelfth and final studio album by Canadian-American rock group The Band. Recorded in the spring of 1998 in Levon Helm's home studio in Woodstock, New York, it was released on September 15, 1998.

For the only time in their latter-day career, bucking the trend set on the first two studio albums, Jericho and High on the Hog, there were more originals than covers on Jubilation. Songs include "Last Train to Memphis", featuring guest guitarist Eric Clapton, Garth Hudson's solo instrumental closer "French Girls", Rick Danko's "High Cotton" and the ode to Ronnie Hawkins, "White Cadillac".

On only one track, "If I Should Fail", do all six group members appear. Helm and Danko are missing from one track each, guitarist Jim Weider is missing from two. Richard Bell is replaced by producer/engineer Aaron Hurwitz on piano and keyboards for much of the album (Bell appears on just three tracks). Hudson and drummer-percussionist Randy Ciarlante are on every track. Friends and family abounded to help out.

Colored vinyl released in September 1998 in a limited run.
