Jud Süß, a Novelle by W. Hauff, published in Novellen (1828). It recounts the fall and execution, after the death of the reigning duke, of the Jew Süß (see Süss-Oppenheimer. J.), the corrupt finance minister of Württemberg, in 1737-8. Süß's overthrow is the result of a conspiracy, which is interwoven with a love-affair between Gustav Lanbeck, son of one of the conspirators, and Lea, Süß's sister. Lea, it is implied, drowns herself, and young Lanbeck remains unmarried.
