Cole joined the British band the Records in 1980 and stayed with that group for one album.[1] In the 1980s Cole met Camelia Kath, wife of late Chicago guitarist Terry Kath. Camelia took Jude's tape to Chicago's lead singer Peter Cetera, who passed it on a WB Records A&R person, Michael Ostin, and Cole was signed to Warner Bros. in 1985.[citation needed] The following year, Cole got some of his first mainstream exposure, when he performed the title track to the hit movie, Back to School.
In 1987, Cole recorded a solo record titled, Jude Cole, which had limited commercial success [1], although the single "Like Lovers Do" did generate some noise. In 1990, Cole released the album A View From 3rd Street, which yielded the single "Baby, It's Tonight." Another single from the album, "Time for Letting Go," also made the top 40. Two years later, Cole released the album Start The Car which did not have the same level of success as his prior release.[1] In 1995, Cole released the album I Don´t Know Why I Act This Way, with Pat Mastelotto (ex-Mr Mister) on the drums and Steve Porcaro (ex-Toto) on keyboards and other musicians. [1] In 2000, after a five year hiatus Cole released the album "Falling Home" on CDX Records. [1]
Cole has also performed studio work in Los Angeles, as a singer and musician playing guitar and bass. He sang background vocals on a Del Shannon album produced by Tom Petty. Cole was offered an audition as the bass player for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, which he declined.[citation needed] Cole continues to record with artists like Moon Martin & The Ravens on Capitol Records, Australian rocker Billy Thorpe, Dwight Twilley, Doobie Brothers guitarist Pat Simmons.[citation needed]
Cole has also written the musical score for three films with his record company partner, actor/director Kiefer Sutherland.[citation needed]
Cole is currently involved with Ironworks Music and produces and manages a number of artists such as Lifehouse, Rocco DeLuca, Beth Orton, honeyhoney, MoZella, Jim Stapley and others.[citation needed] He is the producer and co-writer of the songs, You & Me, First Time, Colorful and Whatever It Takes.
Cole is manager for the American rock band Lifehouse and has co-written songs with Jason Wade.[citation needed]
In 2005, Cole began contributing segments to the entertainment television program Extra.[citation needed]
Cole married Lori Pfeiffer in 1992 and has two children. Cole's wife is the sister of actress Michelle Pfeiffer.[citation needed]
