Biography

Though he was behind 18 films over his 40-year career, Hollywood producer Julian Blaustein is still best-remembered for the sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951). Other notable Blaustein films include Broken Arrow (1950), Bell, Book and Candle (1958), and Khartoum (1966). A graduate of Boston Latin School and Harvard, the New York City-born Blaustein started out reading scripts for Universal studios and by 1938 was helming the story department. He was a member of the Army Signal Corps photo center during the war and helped churn out over 250 training films, documentaries and information films. Following his discharge, Blaustein became an editorial supervisor for David O. Selznick Productions. He became a producer in 1949 after jumping to 20th Century Fox. Three years later, he left the studio to become an independent producer. He subsequently made films for MGM, United Artists, Universal and Columbia Pictures. In 1946, Blaustein joined the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. His main contribution there was to found and manage the Don & Gee Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting from its beginning until 1985.
