Julien Offray de La Mettrie

(1709–51). French philosopher and surgeon. His courageously expressed mechanistic ideas became so unpopular in France that he lived in exile in Leiden, where he published the first clear account of man as a machine: L'Homme machine (1748; English trans., Gertrude C. Bussey, Man a Machine, 1953) an important and liberating description.
