Stahel, Julius (1825-1912) born in Hungary, Stahel fled to Berlin, London, and, finally, New York after fighting with Kossuth (Hungary's revolutionary leader) for the independence of Hungary from Austria. He worked as a journalist until commissioned a Lt. Col. in the Union Army in 1861, and rose quickly to brigadier general that same year. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for being wounded near Piedmont in 1864.
