Biography

First appearing on the Canadian pop charts in 1998 with the single "Rally'n," Jully Black (born Jully Ann Inderia Gordon in Toronto in November 1977) had a few false starts before getting some career consistency that would find her back on the charts in 2007. A songwriter who found her work being scooped up by a varied array of pop music luminaries, such as Destiny's Child and Nas, she also found herself sharing stages with an even more varied group, ranging from Usher to Bon Jovi to Jay-Z. After the success of her 1998 single, one would have expected her next move, a full-length debut, to come rather quickly, but the planned 2003 release of said debut, I Travelled, was delayed and then indefinitely shelved upon the demise of her label at MCA. That situation was -- somewhat -- rectified in 2005, when Universal Music Canada released her album This Is Me. The album failed to find a significant audience, yet Black soldiered on, releasing the well-received single "Seven Day Fool" in 2007. That single was followed by her second full-length, Revival, in October of the same year. ~ Chris True, All Music Guide

Jully Black (pronounced /ˈdʒuːliː/ or "Julie") (born Jully Ann Inderia Gordon on November 8, 1977 in Toronto, Ontario) is a Canadian R&B singer of Jamaican heritage, and was brought up in the Jane and Finch area of Toronto. She has collaborated and written for many notable artists, including Nas, Missy Elliott, Saukrates, Choclair, Kardinal Offishall, Destiny's Child, and Sean Paul.

In addition to her career as a recording artist, Black is also a celebrity reporter for CTV's daily entertainment magazine etalk. [1]

Black had a Top 40 hit on the Canadian charts in 1998 with "Rally'n". She has had subsequent hits with singles such as "You Changed" and "Between Me and U". She had also been invited to contribute to Rascalz' groundbreaking hip hop single "Northern Touch" in 1998, but was unable to participate due to other commitments.[2]

Her solo debut album was originally scheduled for release in 2003 on MCA Records, under the title I Traveled.[3] However, it was heavily delayed, MCA eventually folded in 2003, and the album was shelved.

In summer 2005, a newly recorded album, This Is Me, was released by Universal Music Canada. The album included the hit singles "Sweat of Your Brow" and "5x Love". According to a piracy report by IFPI, the international music industry body, there were "2.8 million illegal file swapping requests for her music in the first two weeks of her album's release in 2005". At the same time, Black reportedly "struggled to sell 15,000 copies of the same album".

In summer 2007, a new single entitled "Seven Day Fool" was released, eventually becoming Black's first Top 10 hit in Canada. Her second album Revival was released on October 16, 2007 and was awarded the Juno for R&B/Soul Recording of the Year in Calgary on April 6, 2008, at which she was the closing act on the telecast performing "Seven Day Fool".

Black was a correspondent on the sixth season of Canadian Idol. She also hosted the 2008 Canadian Radio Music Awards.
