K[KV].

Abbreviation for Köchel (Köchel-Verzeichnis), the chronological thematic catalogue of Mozart's works prepared by Ludwig von Köchel (1862, 6/1964). Köchel's original numberings have been changed in successive editions in the light of views about the chronology of different works; where the more recent number differs from the better-known original one, both are commonly given, usually in the form 191/186 e (as in this dictionary), 191 = 186 e or 191(186 e). Sometimes K is printed with a superscript number (K³) to distinguish the edition cited. The letter K is also sometimes used for numbers in R. Kirkpatrick's catalogue of D. Scarlatti's harpsichord sonatas, though Kk is often preferred to avoid confusion with Köchel numbers.
