Kālacakra Tantra

Buddhism Dictionary: Kālacakra Tantra

Possibly the last great tantra to be compiled in India around the 10th century ce, the Kālacakra (Wheel of Time) Tantra is said to have been written down by the mythical King Suchandra of Shambhala. Exegetically, it is said to comprise three sections dealing with outer, inner, and secret levels of teachings covering respectively the workings of the outer macrocosm, the inner spiritual microcosm, and the integration of these two aspects. As its title suggests, special calendrical and astronomical teachings are stressed in the Kālacakra, and it is believed that those who receive the Kālacakra initiation (performed each year by the Dalai Lama) will be reborn in the mythical land of Shambhala. The Kālacakra Tantra also includes a set of six yogas similar in some respects to the Six Yogas of Nāropa.
