(b Hiroshima, 1 Sept 1911). Japanese composer. He studied the cello, composition and conducting at Tokyo Music School and has taught at the music college and the Academy of Arts in Kyoto. His music, spirited and firmly constructed, includes nine string quartets (1935-55), a Clarinet Quintet (1942) and a Piano Sextet (1964) as well as a Cello Concerto (1937) and two symphonies (1957, 1960).
