German Literature Companion:

'Künstlers Apotheose'

‘Künstlers Apotheose’, a short dramatic verse sketch written by Goethe in 1788 and published in the following year. It forms a sequel to Des Künstlers Erdewallen. The painter, who in life has starved, achieves artistic immortality after his death with the picture of Venus Urania, which in his lifetime was ignored. The poem is written in the irregular Knittelverse of Goethe's Sturm und Drang years.
