German Literature Companion:

Kaiser Lothar III

Lothar III, Kaiser (?-1137, Breitenwang, Außerfern, Tyrol), known as Lothar von Sachsen or von Supplinburg, was elected German King in 1125 on the death of Heinrich V, in preference to Duke Friedrich von Schwaben (1090-1147), Heinrich's nephew. Lothar was in conflict with the Staufen faction (see Hohenstaufen) led by Friedrich, which he subdued successfully by 1135. He pursued the quarrel with the Pope over the investiture of bishops, and he adopted a policy of strengthening the eastern frontiers against the Slavs. He died on the way back from Rome. His body was brought home and buried at Königslutter Abbey, his own foundation, not far from Brunswick.
