Kalapani (Black Water), is a multilingual(Originally in Malayalam) Indian film by Priyadarshan starring Prabhu, Mohanlal, and Tabu in the lead roles. The film is about freedom struggle and the lives of prisoners in British India who are brought to Kālā Pānī, the Cellular Jail in Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The name Kalapani is derived from the mode of imprisonment in British India. Musical maestro Ilayaraja did the musical honors for the movie. The film was critically acclaimed and was well received at the box office. Tabu, till then a Hindi actress, became famous even in South India after this movie.

Story

Story is about the sufferings of a young man(govardhan-mohanlal) who is wrongly accused of being an extremist freedom fighter and is then jailed in a cellular jail at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands by the British. The film also show the cruelties inflicted by British officials on British India.

Languages

Half the film's dialogues are in multiple languages: Malayalam, Hindi, English, Tamil, Bengali, and German. The other half is entirely in one language (originally in Malayalam), but dubbed to Hindi, Tamil (Siraichalai, Telugu, etc. The film released in 450 theatres worldwide


The title in each languages is Kalapani (Malayalam), Saza-E-Kala Pani (Hindi), Sirai Chaalai (Tamil), and Kalapani (Telugu).

Cast and Crew

The actors include Mohanlal, Prabhu, Tabu,Vineeth, Amrish Puri, Vineeth, Annu Kapoor, Alex Draper and Nedumudi Venu. The film is directed by Priyadarsan with music by Ilayaraaja and cinematography by Santosh Sivan. The songs have been rendered by the thespians of Malayalam cinema K.J. Yesudas, K.S. Chitra and M.G.Sreekumar.
