Hanaya, Kambei (Kuwata Kazuo; 1903-91), Japanese photographer. Born in Osaka, he bought a photography shop in neighbouring Ashiya in 1929, and in 1930 co-founded the amateur Ashiya Camera Club. Inspired by European art, he helped to position it as Japan's leading avant-garde photographic group. His reputation grew through his unusual expression of movement through double exposure, montage, slow shutter speeds, etc. and the publication of his photographs in the respected Provoke magazine. He pressed for the establishment of the Kansai Gakusei Shasin Renmei (Kansai Student League of Photography) in 1939, lending his shop as its base, and influenced amateurs throughout his life.
