Kamina

 
 
Kamina (kämē'), city (1984 pop. 171,008), Katanga province, S Congo (Kinshasa). It is an administrative and transportation center. A major military airfield is located there. Kamina was used by the Belgians as a center for interventionist actions in the early months of the Congo's independence (1960). It later served as a center for UN operations during the crisis caused by the secession (1960-63) of Katanga.

Transport

Kamina is known for being an important railway node; three lines of the DRC railways run from Kamina toward the north, west, and south-east. It has two airports, one civil (Kamina Airport) and one military (Kamina Base Airport).

Military

It is now a 'brassage' centre for the slowly forming Army of the Military of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Brassage is the process whereby fighters of the former DRC warring factions are brought together into new combined units.
