Review
With Kanyok & Luba, a selection of field recordings made of the Kanyok and the multicultural Luba are presented. Collected by musicologist Hugh Tracey at a time when Belgium's will and ability to govern the Congo were fading, the recordings reflect a tremendous vareity of musical styles, instruments, and practices. Standout tracks include "Drum Message I" and "Drum Message II," a series of demonstrations played by Kazadi Celestin on a cyond slit drum. The Kanyok drummer recites the message and then plays it on his cyond, giving the listener a rare opportunity to experience the complexity of this utilitarian art form. The Luba-Kasai protest song "Kaleleke Wetu Yamba Mwana Wa Mbaya" is also a must-hear. In it a group of women use chipeni singing gourds to resonate their voices and amplify their concerns about a worker's death in the nearby uranium mine. These singers ricochet their voices back and forth in a complex series of alternating melodic patterns. Detailed liner notes -- replete with comments about each track and a brief history of the region -- contextualize and thus fortify the CD's already stellar sounds. ~ John Vallier, All Music GuideTracks
