Indian (Panjab): Hindu (Khatri) and Sikh name of a clan in the Khatri community, whose ancestor is said to have been called Kapoor Chand. The derivation is from a personal name meaning ‘camphor’ (Sanskrit karpūra). In Sanskrit literature, it is quite common as a personal name, and there is also a feminine form, karpūrikā. Many compound names are also found with karpūa as the first element: masculine names such as Karpuravarsha, Karpurasena, as well as feminine names such as Karpuratilaka and Karpuramanjari.
