Karey Kirkpatrick (born c. 1965) is a screenwriter. His films include James and the Giant Peach, Chicken Run, Curious George, Charlotte's Web and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy adaptation. He directed Imagine That starring Eddie Murphy as well as Over the Hedge with Tim Johnson.
Kirkpatrick attended the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, graduating in 1988.[1]
Formerly, he performed in the SAK Comedy Lab improvisational theater in Orlando, Florida. He is an alumnus of Baton Rouge Magnet High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. While in high school, he performed in many music theatre productions, including A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, in which he played the lead role of Pseudolus. He also formed an early contemporary Christian band, Crossroads, with fellow students Byron Simpson, Leslie Hammatt, Libby Williams and Todd Hinkie. Crossroads covered early songs from Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith as well as tunes written by Karey's older brother, Wayne Kirkpatrick, who went on to cowrite and produce extensively with Grant and Smith.
Karey Kirkpatrick and Byron Simpson got their first big break writing screenplays for an upstart movie production company, Touchstone Pictures, with the screenplay for The Rescuers Down Under.
