Biography

The inspiration for over a dozen web shrines, B-movie queen and pop diva Kari Wuhrer has built an expansive list of credits since debuting in the early '80s. Born in Brookfield, CT, to Andrew, a police officer turned salesman, and Karin, a payroll accountant, Wuhrer began her career by singing in local talent contests. As a teenager, she would sneak into Manhattan to play with her punk rock band, Freudian Slip. She also began taking acting classes and persuaded her mother to take her to an audition for Ford Modeling Agency's Talent Division. The company signed her on the spot. She started appearing in commercials, and later juggled her acting roles with drama classes at N.Y.U.'s Tisch School of the Arts and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. After making her film debut in Fire With Fire (1986), Wuhrer became an MTV veejay and the co-host of network's quiz show Remote Control. She then paid her own way out to Hollywood to make a cameo in the Andrew Dice Clay vehicle The Adventures of Ford Fairlane (1990). Wuhrer eventually settled in Los Angeles, appearing in Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time (1991) and landing a guest spot on Fox's Married With Children. Her own 1993 Fox series, Class of '96, failed to attract viewers, but the network still hired Wuhrer to bed Brian Austin Green in two episodes of Beverly Hills 90210 in 1994. That same year, she began landing more substantial roles, acting opposite Jack Nicholson in Sean Penn's The Crossing Guard and Laurence Fishburne in John Singleton's Higher Learning (1995). Wuhrer played a gypsy in Stephen King's Thinner (1996), before increasing her fan base exponentially when she joined the cast of the sci-fi series Sliders in 1997. While portraying sultry Maggie Beckett on the hit show, she appeared with Jennifer Lopez in Anaconda (1997) and David Schwimmer in Kissing a Fool (1998), as well as headlined numerous B-films, straight-to-video releases, and television movies. In 1999, Wuhrer, who sang and composed songs for several soundtracks, released her first album. Entitled Shiny, it boasted the popular single "There's a Drug." The new millennium saw Wuhrer leaving Sliders and lending her talents (and internet following) to the computer game series Command & Conquer, starring as Agent Tanya in Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge. She made two guest appearances on CBS's CSI and appeared in a string of B-pictures and independent pictures, including Spider's Web (2001), The Rose Technique (2001), The Medicine Show (2001), Berserker (2001), and Malevolent (2002). A veteran of over 40 screen roles, Wuhrer then cashed in on her cult status for Centropolis Entertainment's big-budget homage to low-budget creature flicks, Eight Legged Freaks (2002) -- proving that she had both wit and staying power. ~ Aubry Anne D'Arminio, All Movie Guide

Biography

Early life

Wührer was born in Brookfield, Connecticut, the daughter of Karin (née Noble), a payroll accountant, and Andrew Wührer, a police officer and car salesman.[1] She has three siblings. As a teenager, she sang in nightclubs, sneaking out of the family home to perform. Wührer began studying acting at the age of 13 at the Wooster School. She studied drama at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, Marymount Manhattan College, Columbia University, and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London with famed teacher Uta Hagen.

Career

Wührer's first television break was working for MTV on Remote Control (1987), before moving on to film. After appearing in The Adventures of Ford Fairlane (1990) and the leading lady role of Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time (1991), she then starred in over a dozen straight-to-video sexploitation movies, most notably Sex and the Other Man (1996) and Spider's Web (2001). In between, she co-starred in a Canadian art film entitled Vivid (1997) (also released as Luscious). Wührer appeared in the television series Swamp Thing as Abigail from 1991-1993.

Wührer came to mainstream fame in 1997 on the series Sliders as Maggie Beckett, joining the cast as a regular and staying until the show ended in 2000. Later mainstream movie roles include Anaconda (1997), Berserker (2001) and Eight Legged Freaks (2002). Wührer is also well known by many gamers for her role in Westwood Studios' PC game Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 and its subsequent expansion pack, Yuri's Revenge as Special Agent Tanya. Previously played by Lynne Litteer and followed by Jenny McCarthy

Wührer signed a record deal with Rick Rubin and her debut album was called Shiny, released in 1999. She plays the guitar and the flute as well as sings.

Wührer, who considered an offer to appear nude in Playboy in 1998, was later voted #76 on the FHM 100 Sexiest Women of 2000.[2] #73 in the FHM 100 Sexiest Women in the World 2001,[3] #36 in Maxim magazine's 50 Sexiest Women Countdown (1999), #64 on Celebrity Skin's 100 Sexiest Stars of All Time, and #4 in the Celebrity Nudity Database most popular actresses (1999).

Her breast implants encapsulated during the filming of Spider's Web (2001) so she had them removed.[4] She later wrote an article for the September 2002 issue of Glamour Magazine about the insecurities that led her to get implants early in her career and the sense of self-acceptance she acquired. After its publication, she appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and discussed the pressure she received from a prominent record producer to get the implants, during what she called "the era of the Video Vixen".

General Hospital

From February 3, 2005 through November 2005 Wührer joined the cast of the soap opera General Hospital as FBI Agent Reese Marshall, the former love interest of mobster Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) and former best friend/rival of main character, Carly Corinthos, played by Jennifer Bransford. Wührer's character died after suffering injuries in a train wreck.

In January 2006, Wührer announced that she was suing General Hospital, claiming that she was fired because of her pregnancy.[5] The case was resolved in December 2006.

Personal life

Wührer married Daniel Salin in 1994 and divorced in 1999.

Wührer married the film producer James Scura in 2003. She and her husband have three children: a boy named Enzo, born January 2004, a girl named Evangeline, born March 27, 2006 and on September 4, 2008, she gave birth to a girl named Echo Luna.
