German Literature Companion: Karl Gustav Vollmoeller

Vollmoeller, Karl Gustav (Stuttgart, 1878-1948, Los Angeles), a wealthy businessman and amateur of literature, was in touch with S. George and his group of disciples (see George-Kreis). He translated poetry by G. d'Annunzio, and published a volume of his own verse (Die frühen Gärten, 1903). Among his plays, the wordless (‘Pantomime’) Das Mirakel (1912), with music by E. Humperdinck, achieved international success when premièred by Max Reinhardt in Berlin in 1914. He was also a pioneer in the film industry. A select edition of his poetry was published by H. Steiner in 1960.
