Coordinates: Kartarpur (meaning: The City of God), is a city and a municipal council in Jalandhar district in the Indian state of Punjab. The city was established during 1520s A.D. by the first Guru of Sikhism, Guru Nanak and where he taught Sikhism. It considered the birth place of Sikhism and is one of the holiest cities in Sikhism. It is near the historical town of Dera Baba Nanak and on the banks of the Ravi river. Located in the Majha region of the state.
There is also town named Kartarpur in Kartarpur (Jalandhar district) near the city of Jalandhar and is located in the Doaba region of the state. It was founded by the fifth Guru of Sikhism, Guru Arjan Dev.

As of 2001 India census[2], Kartarpur had a population of 25,152. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Kartarpur has an average literacy rate of 69%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 72%, and female literacy is 66%. In Kartarpur, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.
