Biography

Katie Noonan's parents, opera singer Maggie Noonan and journalist and singer Brian Noonan, met on the set of the performance TV program Showcase (she won the judges' vote; he the viewers'). Accordingly, they raised their children surrounded by music. Her brother, Tyrone Noonan, was also strongly influenced by that upbringing, and the two of them formed the band george in 1996 to enter a talent competition. In 1997 she also formed a jazz group called Elixir with her future husband, Zac Hurren, releasing a self-titled album a year later.

At the time, Katie was still studying opera and jazz at the Queensland Conservatorium, and it was not until 2002 that george recorded a debut album. That album, Polyserena, debuted at number one. Within two months, it had sold enough copies to be certified platinum. Their follow-up album, Unity, was recorded the next year in Byron Bay and released in 2004. That year also saw the release of an album of duets between Katie and her mother, Maggie, Two of a Kind, a blend of their jazz and operatic sensibilities.

After the release of those two albums, Katie took a break from music to marry and begin a family. She wasn't able to stay away from her art for long, and in 2005 she released an album with jazz musician Paul Grabowsky called Before Time Could Change Us, a cycle of songs written by Dorothy Porter. Her next project was recording a solo album at Linear Studios in Sydney, which she did while pregnant with her second son. That album, Skin, was released in 2007. ~ Jody Macgregor, All Music Guide

Musical career and personal life

Katie Noonan grew up with a strong background in classical music with her mother, Maggie Noonan, being a well-known opera singer. She studied opera and jazz at the Queensland Conservatorium.

Noonan founded the band george with her brother Tyrone, with whom she shares lead vocals, in 1996 to enter a university music competition. After a series of successful independently released EPs, they signed to Festival Mushroom Records and released the debut album Polyserena in 2002, which entered the ARIA charts at #1. george won the Best New Artist ARIA award in 2003, performing Breathe In Now at the ceremony.

She founded the jazz trio Elixir in 1997, which released their debut self titled album in 2003.

Noonan has released an album with her mother Maggie Noonan - a collection of jazz & operatic duets.

Paul Grabowsky and Katie Noonan teamed up for the jazz cycle Before Time Could Change Us, words by Dorothy Porter.

She is married to Isaac Hurren, her longtime partner and collaborator in Elixir. They have two young sons, Dexter Reed and Jonah Atticus Roc.

She has recently released a solo album - Skin which was recorded at Sydney's Linear Recording in 2006. Produced by Andrew Klippel, Skin was released on 11 August 2007, and debuted at #6 on the ARIA top 50 album charts and #1 on the Australian ARIA Top 20 Album chart. The debut single Time To Begin debuted at #30 on the ARIA Top 50. Plans to release Love's My Song For You / Crazy never eventuated beyond a radio promotional single.

Following the success of the remix of Time To Begin, Katie collaborated with John Course & MrTimothy, re-recording her vocal tracks & re-releasing her debut solo album in dance form under the title Second Skin. The song Logic served as the first (radio promo only) single for this LP.

On 22 February 2008 she was a support act for Cyndi Lauper at King's Park Botanic Gardens, Perth, and was invited on stage by Cyndi to sing along to Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.

Katie is currently featured as the vocalist in Telstra's 'I Am Australian' series of advertisements, and has recently switched labels to SonyBMG, and has plans to release a new jazz LP in 2008.
