City (pop., 2006 est.: 1,342,262) and port, east-central Honshu, Japan. It lies on Tokyo Bay, between Tokyo and Yokohama. Almost completely destroyed in World War II, it has since been rebuilt. It is a major industrial centre for machinery and chemicals manufacturing and has large shipbuilding facilities. It is the site of a 12th-century Buddhist temple.

Kawasaki (käwä'säkē), city (1990 pop. 1,173,603), Kanagawa prefecture, central Honshu, Japan, on Tokyo Bay. Located in the Tokyo-Yokohama industrial area, it has steel mills, shipyards, oil refineries, engineering works, and factories that produce motor vehicles, computer equipment, electrical machinery and parts, petrochemicals, and cement. Heigenji Temple, dedicated to Kukai, is in Kawasaki.
