Biography

Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald was planning to go to drama school when director Danny Boyle cast her in Trainspotting (1996). A surprise international hit, it featured Macdonald, a native of Glasgow, as the acid-tongued schoolgirl who gives heroin junkie Ewan McGregor one of the more memorable nights -- and surprises -- of his young life.

Following the film's great success, Macdonald began finding steady work in a number of films as both a lead and supporting player. In the immediate wake of Trainspotting, she could be seen playing the title character, a teenage prostitute, in Stella Does Tricks. Subsequently, she nabbed a lead role in the period drama Cousin Bette (1997) and a small but memorable part in the lavish historical epic Elizabeth (1998). In 1999, Macdonald was featured in four very diverse films: the first, My Life So Far, cast her as a young girl growing up in 1920s Scotland, while Entropy featured the actress in the thoroughly modern milieu of the 20-something romantic angst drama. Later that year, Macdonald appeared in Mike Figgis' The Loss of Sexual Innocence, playing the young girlfriend of the film's protagonist; and in Gregg Araki's Splendor, a romantic comedy in which she played the blue-haired best friend of the film's heroine.

After a slew of similar supporting roles, including a memorable turn as the daughter of Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Colin Firth in My Life So Far, MacDonald was given possibly her biggest break since Trainspotting when Robert Altman cast her as a lead (albeit one of many) in Gosford Park (2001). One-part comedy of manners, one-part murder mystery, the film featured MacDonald in the pivotal role of a young maid who finds herself caught up in a whirl of intrigue, deception, and exceedingly tiresome snobs over the course of a hectic weekend at a country estate. ~ Rebecca Flint Marx, All Movie Guide

Early life

Macdonald was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Her mother was a garment industry sales executive.[1] Her parents divorced when she was young. She and her younger brother were raised by her mother on a council estate in the town of Newton Mearns. Macdonald attended Eastwood High School. Her family moved around frequently when she was a child.

Macdonald moved away from home when she was 17 years old. She took a college course in modern studies while living with a friend in Glasgow, but she soon dropped out of the class.

Career

Macdonald's career began while working as a barmaid.[2] She saw a leaflet advertising an open casting session for Trainspotting and decided to audition, successfully winning the part of Diane, the underage seductress to Ewan McGregor's Renton. Other roles include a reporter in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and an actress playing Peter Pan in Finding Neverland. She also had a major role in Robert Altman's British period piece Gosford Park, where she played a maid.

On television, her highest-profile roles have been in two BBC dramas, the Paul Abbott serial State of Play (2003) and the one-off Richard Curtis piece The Girl in the Café (2005). Both of these were directed by David Yates, and both also starred Bill Nighy. For her performance in The Girl in the Café, Macdonald was nominated for a Golden Globe in 2006, and won an Emmy.

Macdonald starred in the 2005 film Nanny McPhee, as the scullery maid Evangeline, and A Cock and Bull Story, where she plays the girlfriend of actor Steve Coogan's onscreen alter ego. In 2007, Macdonald was cast in the Coen Brothers' Academy Award-winning No Country for Old Men, in which she played the wife of the film's protagonist. Macdonald's agent originally wasn't sure she was right for the part, and Macdonald is reported as having to "fight for the role".[3] Her persistence paid off, however, as she was nominated for a BAFTA for best supporting actress. In 2008, she played Dr. Paige Marshall in the film Choke, adapted by Clark Gregg from the 2001 Chuck Palahniuk novel.

Personal life

In August 2003, Macdonald married Travis bass player Dougie Payne. The couple lives in London. Their son, Freddie Peter Payne, was born on 9 March 2008.
