Kenta Fukasaku

Wikipedia: Kenta Fukasaku

Kenta Fukasaku (深作 健太 Fukasaku Kenta?, born September 15, 1972; Tokyo, Japan) is a Japanese filmmaker and screenwriter. He is the son of filmmaker Kinji Fukasaku and actress Sanae Nakahara.

He made his writing debut in the popular Japanese cult film Battle Royale, which his father directed. He wrote the screenplay to the sequel, and took over directing when his father died of cancer. The film was released in Japan during the winter of 2003.

He has since directed two more films. In 2005, he directed a film called Under The Same Moon (同じツキみている Onaji tsuki o miteiru?) which starred Battle Royale's Taro Yamamoto. His adaptation of the manga Sukeban Deka was released in 2006, under the title Yo Yo Girl Cop. He also directed horror film X-Cross.

Availability To English-speaking Audiences

Kenta Fukasaku has the rare distinction of having almost all of his feature work made available to English-speaking (reading?) audiences. Battle Royale II was released on DVD in the U.K. by Tartan[1], in both regular and limited multi-disc editions; Japanese and Chinese releases are available in the U.S., both of which contain English subtitles. Yo-Yo Girl Cop has been released on DVD in the U.S. by Magnolia[2] and in the U.K. by 4Digital Asia[3]. X-Cross has been released in the U.K. by 4Digital Asia[4].
