There's not any real answer. When Jim got the job on Sam & Friends, Kermit was just a lizard that he used, and he used it a lot. Eventually, the lizard morphed into a frog, and the frog became the Kermit we know today.

Jim Henson's Muppets were moved in a variety of ways. Some were manipulated using puppeteer's sticks (Rizzo, Animal's and Elmo's hands and feet, Beeker's mouth, etc.), some utilized marionette strings (small flying extras like bats and birds), still others were manipulated by the hands of puppeteers inside of them (Kermit, Miss Piggy, Rolf, Oscar, Cookie, and Elmo's body and mouth). A few of the larger Muppets were full sized costumes with a puppeteer inside (Big Bird, Snufflufagus, etc.). Occassionally, they were animatronic or remote control.
