A county whose name is derived from the Ciarrai, the people of Ciarraige 'Kingdom of Ciar', son of King Fergus, legendary King of Ulster in the first decades of the first millennium ad. At this time the area was known as Clar na Cliabh 'The Plain of Swords', but by the 6th century it had become Ciarraige.
