Review
According to alterna-rock legend, Jane's Addiction was the band responsible for laying the groundwork of the alternative rock explosion in the early '90s, but like most legends, that's half true and half lie. Jane's was instrumental in making alternative rock accessible to the metal audience, mainly because they were essentially a metal band with neo-psychedelic, neo-prog pretensions -- two genres that have always appealed to metal and hard rock audiences. Nothing confirms that fact like Kettle Whistle, an odds and ends collection of live tracks, demos, alternate takes, and new tracks recorded by a "relapsed" Jane's featuring all the original members minus Eric Avery, who is replaced by Flea. Listening to Kettle Whistle, Jane's Addiction sounds more like an adventurous metal band than an alternative band, and that's not because the mainstream has changed -- it's because that the elapsed time has given a perspective on their sound. Above all, the live tracks capture both the power and the transcendence of Jane's Addiction's live performances. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
Kettle Whistle is a rarities compilation album by alternative rock band Jane's Addiction, released November 4, 1997 on Warner Bros. The album was released to coincide with the Jane's Addiction's 1997 "Relapse" tour, and includes new recordings, unreleased demos and live tracks.
Kettle Whistle is the only Jane's Addiction release to feature Flea on bass. Flea appears on the new tracks: "Kettle Whistle" and "So What!".
"Kettle Whistle" was performed by the band in the late eighties, and never recorded. The "Relapse" line-up of the band recorded the song in August of that year at Mount Mehru Studios in Venice, CA. This studio is owned by Farrell and Perkins' former band Porno for Pyros
The version of "Ocean Size" included on this compilation is a demo the band recorded to show their producing abilities to Warner Bros. The track was recorded at Capitol Records Studios in 1988.
"My Cat's Name is Maceo" is about Farrell's cat and was recorded in 1987 at Hully Gully Studios, Los Angeles.
The version of "Had a Dad" included was originally intended for Nothing's Shocking but was rejected by Warner Bros.
"So What!" is a new song recorded by the "Relapse" line-up.
The live version of "Jane Says" is from the first Lollapalooza, which was also the band's final tour.
The demo version of "Mountain Song" was used to get the band signed to XXX records.
"Slow Divers" was the opening track for the live show which was released as Jane's Addiction.
