KGME, branded XTRA Sports 910, is a sports radio station located in Phoenix, Arizona. KGME is owned by Clear Channel Communications, the former owners of Mexican station XETRA in Southern California, where the XTRA name came from.
The station's weekday lineup is as follows: "Bickley and MJ" with Arizona Republic Columnist Dan Bickley and Mike Jurecki (2pm-6pm), Jim Rome (10am-1pm) and Dan Patrick (7am-10am), along with Fox Sports Radio at night. Fox Sports Radio also airs in most weekend and overnight timeslots. Bickley and MJ is the highest rated morning sports show in Phoenix and was named Sports Talk Show of the year in 2007 by Phoenix Magazine. KGME has been nominated in 2007 and 2008 for the NAB Marconi Award for Sports Station of the year.
Starting in 2008-2009, KGME will be the new flagship station of the Phoenix Coyotes. That makes KGME the only radio station in the "Valley of the Sun," other than the Bonneville International family of stations, with broadcast rights to a major local professional sports team.
The rest of KGME's play-by-play comes from Westwood One, including primetime National Football League games and the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament. It also airs NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races.
Station history
910 was originally KPHO (now the call letters of the Phoenix CBS TV affiliate), operating on 1230 from 1940-1949; the station moved to 910 in 1949. In 1971, it changed call letters to KJJJ as "Big Country KJ" until 1986, when it would become KFYI, being purchased by Fred Weber's Broadcast Group.
KFYI would implement a talk format. Over the years, it was the home to hosts that would go on to greater success, such as Tom Leykis. In 1999, Broadcast Group sold to AMFM, formerly Chancellor. On January 1, 2000, after AMFM merged with Clear Channel Communications, KFYI would move to 550, swapping frequencies with what is now KGME.
