Game Description
In a derivative fashion, Kicker attempts to take the best aspects of two other gaming classics and combine them. Gameplay is part Yie Ar Kung Fu in that your character is controlled in a very similar fashion. The genre is oriental kick fighting much like Yie Ar, but instead of the action taking place on a single level, it is a platform style fighter, reminiscent of Mario Brothers. The object is to defeat a finite amount of badguys per level using kicks in different combinations to advance to the next level. Along the way you'll come across enhanced ninjas which will release powerups once defeated, and boss type characters which take more than traditional kicks in order to defeat.~ Paul Biondich, All Game Guide
Review: Overall
Derivative games are often hit or miss. Many gameplayers will play derivate titles such as Kicker and long for the simple and addictive gameplay of the original, and others will enjoy the enhancements and combinations that the new followups often provide. In the case of Kicker, a very nondescript title for mid-1980s arcade fare, the feeling is more the former than the latter. It's certainly nothing groundbreaking from a gameplay perspective. As mentioned in the description, the game is very reminiscent of Mario Brothers meets Yie Ar Kung Fu, two arcade classics. Alone, these games are wonderful. When Konami came up with this idea, the entire package ended up being a stale one. Gameplay is very familiar: kick fighters until they're all gone. Sure, a few mildly interesting powerups are thrown into the mix, and the boss characters are mildly entertaining from a challenge standpoint. The graphics however, are mediocre for their time, and the sound surely isn't much to write home about. Usually a game of this sort adds something to the genres, but this game just combines gameplay dynamics behind dated graphics and sound. Boring.
Konami is often known in the gaming community for interesting and even captivating games. Look at Metal Gear Solid, evidence that the company has the ability to do a solid game. This game however, is purely mediocrity at it's best. Nice attempt at doing something different, but an average release nonetheless.
