Biography

In the mid-2000s, alternative hip-hop duo Kidz in the Hall became the new face for the revamped Rawkus Records, the underground rap powerhouse responsible for introducing groundbreaking acts like Mos Def and Talib Kweli before its operations were temporarily closed in 2004. Naledge's intelligence, imagery, and lyricism combined with the progressive and often jazz-inflected sounds of DJ/producer Double O easily recall the early-'90s aesthetic of hip-hop groups such as Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth, Gang Starr, or Souls of Mischief. A native of Chicago, Naledge (born Jabari Evans) was always the creative and lyrical type of guy, writing poetry and short stories since he was 13, but the New Jersey-bred Double O (born Michael Aguilar) always had been a techie, first DJing in the ninth grade and then composing beats in college. They first met each other at their alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania. After witnessing Naledge's rhyme skills at a talent show during his recruiter's visit, impressed audience members pointed him toward the talented DJ. Over the years, the two Ivy Leaguers worked together and became good friends. Once Naledge graduated, he again hooked up with Double O, who had relocated to Los Angeles as an engineer for Sony Studios, and decided to form professionally as Kidz in the Hall. Naledge was already signed as a solo act to the reborn Rawkus and simply brought the Kidz in the Hall duo over to the label. The amount of (mostly Internet) press coverage greatly increased after prolific producer Just Blaze, a fellow techie, friend, and mentor of Double O, co-signed the group's efforts. Naledge and Double O heavily promoted themselves through the Internet and released several mixtapes to build up anticipation for their favorably received Rawkus debut, School Was My Hustle, in October 2006. ~ Cyril Cordor, All Music Guide

History

Group members Jabari Evans (Naledge) and Michael Aguilar (Double-O) met in 2000 during a talent show at the University of Pennsylvania. They began recording songs, making demos, and performing at local shows. That eventually led to Double-0 and Naledge forming Kidz in the Hall. Double-0 eventually made a connection with Just Blaze. Blaze aligned himself with the duo and oversaw School Was My Hustle. Kidz in the Hall signed a group deal with Rawkus Records, and released their debut album School Was My Hustle in 2006.[1]

In November 2007, Kidz in the Hall were officially signed to Duck Down Records, an independent label started by founding members of the Boot Camp Clik. The duo's most recent album, The In Crowd, was released in May 2008, on lead single "Drivin' Down the Block," which samples Masta Ace's song "Born to Roll" for the hook and contains an interpolation of Outkast's "Elevators (Me & You)" on the bridge. Many other tracks on the album use samples and interpolations of early 1990s hip hop, including their song "Snob Hop" featuring Camp Lo which uses the hook from Black Sheep's song "Flava of the Month" for the chorus. Their song "Blackout" was featured on the soundtrack of Madden '09. Naledge is also planning to come out with a solo album in the near future. He says exclusively to hiphopdx.com, "My solo album is still in the process of being put together. I’ve been busy with shows, but I have some tracks in the works," says [Naledge]]. "I got beats from 9th Wonder, Black Milk, Double-O, Pete Rock and [two or three from] Just Blaze. Just Blaze has been my ‘yes man,’ okaying tracks for the album." http://www.hiphopdx.com/index/news/id.7891/title.exclusive-naledge-talks-solo-album-upcoming-projects

Kidz and Obama

In early 2007, Kidz in the Hall created a song entitled "Work To Do" in support of democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. The song features a sample from The Main Ingredient's version of the Isley Brothers original of the same name. As the song and its message exploded across the internet it quickly became endorsed by Obama's campaign.[2]

Fight in Tempe

On July 26, 2008, after a show at the Cherry Lounge & Pit in Tempe, Arizona, an altercation took place between Double-O and one of the Cherry Lounge bouncers. According to witnesses, after Double-O subdued the bouncer, several more of the bar's security became involved. A cameraman who had been hired to record the performance was able to catch a portion of the incident on video, which apparently shows the bouncers ganging up on Double-O, and at one point even pulling the DJ's hands away from defending his face so they could continue to punch him. Both Double-O and Naledge were arrested, and Double-O charged with Assault and Disorderly Conduct. Arraignment was to take place on August 5th, 2008, but was postponed, possibly due to the fact that Double-O required intensive surgery to repair a broken eye socket sustained during the attack.[3]
