Kimball

American firm of reed organ, piano and organ makers. It was founded in Chicago in 1857 by William Wallace Kimball (1828-1904). Stressing volume, reasonable price and quality of construction, it manufactured reed organs (1880-1922), pianos (from 1887) and pipe organs (1890-1942), including many notable instruments for Chicago churches. After 1945 the firm concentrated on pianos; besides building a new factory in 1955, it took over Bösendorfer in 1966. Now in Indiana, it also makes electronic organs for home use.
