Biography

Kind of Like Spitting is the outlet for prolific singer/songwriter Ben Barnett. The year 2000 alone saw four full-length releases from him; through Nothing Makes Sense Without It, Old Moon in the Arms of the New, You Secretly Want Me Dead, and One Hundred Dollar Room, Barnett gained comparisons to Elliott Smith, Mark Eitzel, Billy Bragg, and Robert Pollard. A self-titled 2001 release compiled re-recorded versions of early material. Barnett's work is also strewn throughout several singles, EP, and various artist releases. Their next record, Bridges Worth Burning, came out in the summer of 2002. The following tour saw his drummer leave, so he simply let him leave and turned the tour into an acoustic one. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide

Kind of Like Spitting was an American indie rock band. They formed in 1996 in Portland, Oregon. The band was led by prolific singer-songwriter Ben Barnett, who has drawn comparisons to Elliott Smith, Mark Eitzel, Billy Bragg, and Robert Pollard.[1]

Over the next decade Kind of Like Spitting gained a strong following throughout the United States and internationally. Barnett regularly toured in the US, sometimes with David J. or a backing band, but said bands generally disintegrated after touring.

In the UK, the track "Birds of a Feather" was picked up and played by John Peel but didn't get regular airplay.[2]

Kind of Like Spitting was known for recording and releasing many albums in a short time (12 in seven years.) Such habits led one reporter to remark, "Has it been five minutes already? OK, time for a new Kind of Like Spitting album!" when they released The Thrill of the Hunt.[3]

Kind of Like Spitting announced its break-up October 8, 2006 for personal reasons.

Since roughly June 2007 Ben has been involved in the Paul Green School of Rock teaching music to kids in Seattle. At the end of term they often put on a performance which is usually recorded (video) and placed on Youtube, soon after you can expect to see a proud comment and link left on Ben's Myspace page.[citation needed]

At the end of 2007 he appeared under his own name on a Local Cut compilation (released on Boy Gorilla Records) entitled 'Another Grey Christmas' with the song 'Last Christmas in Portland'.[4] He has also begun posting demos of Blunt Mechanic songs (including two John Lennon covers) on his Myspace page.

In 2008 and Blunt Mechanic project became renamed Fun With Friends. January 2009 saw Ben, David J. and Sean Bonnette (Andrew Jackson Jihad) embark on a brief West Coast USA tour. Ben took with him a 10 track CDR entitled 'Songs About Zombies & Trust Issues' put out under his own name, a CD he plans to release more officially during the first couple of months following the tour.
