Biography

An adventurous singer with an intriguing sense of humor, Nancy King stretches and extends the bebop tradition. After high school, she worked in San Francisco with Pharoah Sanders, Pony Poindexter, and a variety of local players. Resettling in the Pacific Northwest, the underrated vocalist has had an underground reputation among jazz singers. King released her first album, Impending Bloom, in 1991, followed five years later by Straight Into Your Heart. She also recorded two live dates, Moon Ray and Live at Jazz Standard, with pianist Fred Hersch; the latter was nominated for Best Jazz Vocal Album in 2006. ~ Scott Yanow & Al Campbell, All Music Guide

King was a monthly men's magazine geared toward African American and urban audiences. It featured articles about hip-Hop and R&B, as well as articles covering sports and fashion. The magazine was published by Harris Publications, and was a spinoff from XXL.[1] It ceased publication on March 31, 2009, citing failing ad sales as a result of the poor economy.[2]

The magazine was mainly characterized by its lavish photoshoots, which usually featured scantily-clad women, often complete with an interview from the featured model. The subjects of these shoots ranged from professional models to well known musicians and actresses. The magazine was known for its disdain for the "Stick-figured" women used as models in other men's magazines, and often promoted the buxom and curvaceous figures of its models. The magazine almost exclusively used pictures from these photoshoots as the cover of the magazine. It also featured its cover with rappers sometimes, but mostly women from models to female rappers, including Trina, Keyshia Cole, Rocsi and former video vixen Melyssa Ford. It also featured interviews from models and rappers.

The magazine was sometimes called "The black Maxim" The Lycos 50 Daily Report noted the magazine received more online searches than Newsweek or Reader's Digest.[3]

Model Toccara Jones and rapper Trina each appeared on the cover of King three times, more than anybody else.
