House, All Game GuideReview: Enjoyment
The world is huge and will keep you exploring for many weeks. While you can literally go anywhere you want to go, the game always remains fun. On the other hand, the story isn't executed too well. This doesn't really hamper the enjoyment of the game too much, as long as you know the basic story and what you need to accomplish. ~ Michael L. House, All Game GuideProduction Credits

Review: Overall
Ascii's King's Field is a role playing game of epic proportions. In it, you are Alexander and must hunt down the evil Guyra, a black dragon threatening King Alfred's beloved country, and stop his horde of minions while searching for the Moonlight Sword and Darkslayer at the same time. The world of King's Field is very vast, and one hundred percent freely explorable. You can literally go anywhere you wish, thanks to the free roaming atmosphere. While much of the game is spent indoors chugging through castles and similar buildings, there are a few outdoor locations, such as waterfalls, lakes, and forests. Contained in these areas are many items which you will find useful. There are hit point power ups, magical power ups, a barrage of weapons and warp keys. Warp keys are very important in navigating around the huge world. From time to time, you will come across little pedestals in which warp keys can be placed, taking you to various locations in the game. You will also come across magical items from time to time. These items give Alexander the power to use magic. There are fire crystals, water crystals, light crystals, etc. Each crystal gives Alexander a different, more powerful spell. Some crystals are hidden in the vast world and some are easily found. The hidden ones are the most powerful and are definitely worth spending some time to find. The player will also come across a few towns on his journey to Guyra. Townspeople fill you in on their shortcomings and problems, at the same time advancing the story. The story in King's Field is a bit too confusing for it's own good. Due to the non-linear play, you can go anywhere you want to. Some townspeople will be talking about things that will be meaningless to you. This isn't too distracting from the game if you know the BASIC story, after all, the non-linear gameplay is what makes King's Field so great.
What also makes King's Field great is the detail. The 3D graphics are very lifelike and look great. Ascii put a great deal of effort into the detail and look of the game and it shows. The control feels like you are actually in Alexander's shoes. You can look up, down, or anywhere you want to for hidden doors or items. Combat is done in real time and feels very real. Sometimes, the combat can be a bit slow or sluggish if a weapon you're using is too heavy for your character. The sound is also great. Things become louder or quieter depending on how far away you are from that object. You can hear the monsters or people in the distance, so it's very helpful in preparing yourself for an attack.
All in all, King's Field is a wonderful game. Though the story is a bit iffy at times, the rich 3D role playing experience will keep you hooked from start to finish for quite some time. ~ Michael L. House, All Game Guide
