British History: kingdom of Lesotho

Former British crown colony of Basutoland. Threatened by the Boers of the Orange Free State, Mshweshwe, the ruler of the Basuto, sought British protection in 1843 and in 1869 agreed to the annexation of his country. Basutoland was administered by its traditional rulers under British supervision until it became independent in 1965.
