Derived from kiri 'paulownia', a deciduous tree of the figwort family with blue or lilac flowers which were dedicated to Anna Pavlovna (1795–1865), third daughter of the Russian Emperor Paul and wife of William II of The Netherlands, and u 'birth'; the Chinese character here is actually sei 'life' or 'existence'.
