Excessive knee laxity; a reduction in the stability of the knee joint. It may be caused by direct injury to the joint, or to a weakening of the muscles (especially the quadriceps and semimembranosus) and/or ligaments (e.g. the anterior cruciate and collateral ligaments) supporting the joint.
