1833 | The Knickerbocker Magazine. The New York monthly literary magazine debuts. It achieves literary merit and good circulation under Lewis Gaylord Clark and Clement M. Edson. Clark's twin brother, Willis Gaylord Clark, provided much of the writing. Other notable contributors included Irving, Cooper, Bryant, Longfellow, Hawthorne, Whittier, Kirkland, and Parkman. Clark's humorous "Editor's Table" was a notable feature. The quality of the magazine diminished by 1850 and, after several changes in ownership and focus, folded in 1865. |
