History

KOAM-TV first signed on at 5:22 PM on December 13, 1953. It was owned by the MidContinent Broadcasting Company, a joint venture of The Joplin Globe newspaper and KOAM radio (860 AM, now KKOW). It was an affiliate of all 4 networks of the time--NBC, CBS, ABC and DuMont. However, it was a primary NBC affiliate owing to KOAM radio's long affiliation with NBC Radio. Eventually, the Globe sold its minority stake to E. Victor Baxter and Lester Cox, owners of KOAM radio.

Its affiliations have changed several times: in 1955, DuMont went off the air, in 1954 KSWM-TV (now KODE-TV) signed on as a CBS affiliate, and in 1967 KUHI-TV signed on as a CBS affiliate, leaving KODE as a sole ABC affiliate and KOAM as a sole NBC affiliate.

In 1980, KOAM swapped affiliations with what was then KTVJ (formerly KUHI and now KSNF) and became a CBS affiliate.

KOAM's digital signal on channel 13 signed on in 2001. KOAM turned off its analog signal at 12:38 a.m. February 17, 2009 following The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. The digital signal moved to channel 7. Sister station KFJX, the market's Fox affiliate moved onto KOAM's former digital channel 13 (KFJX is continuing to broadcast on Channel 14).

"NBC Nightly News" Anchor Brian Williams got his start at KOAM-TV.

Wheel of Fortune is currently on KOAM. Jeopardy!, however, airs on KODE, making Joplin/Pittsburg another market to carry both shows on separate stations (traditionally, both shows air on the same channel).
