(1579–1647)

Japanese architect of numerous houses and gardens. Using finely finished woods, richly-carved transoms, decorative alcoves, and sliding doors and wall-panels, he created a style that was influential thereafter, even into C21. His gardens were intimately connected to his buildings, and he exploited distant vistas, so his work was very unusual for C17. A master of the tea ceremony, he created spacious settings for that ritual.
