KOffice 2.0
The current KOffice 2.0 series is primarily designed for POSIX-compliant operating systems, but has also added compatibility for Mac OS X[2] and Windows.[3] In addition, KOffice is undergoing a large overhaul to use Flake and Pigment as much as possible within applications. KOffice developers plan to share as much infrastructure as possible between applications to reduce bugs and improve the user experience.[4] They also want to create an OpenDocument library for use in other KDE applications that will allow developers to easily add support for reading and outputting OpenDocument files to their applications.[5] Automating tasks and extending the suite with custom functionality can be done with D-Bus or with scripting languages like Python, Ruby, and JavaScript.[6]
While version 2.0 is the current stable release of KOffice, the KOffice development team recommends end users continue using version 1.6.x until the release of KOffice 2.1 or 2.2:
This release is mainly aimed at developers, testers and early adopters. It is not aimed at end users, and we do not recommend Linux distributions to package it as the default office suite yet.KOffice 2.0 will be useful for some users, but since it is the first release in a long series it is likely to contain bugs and incompatibilities.
It is noteworthy that KOffice 2.0 does not have all the features that KOffice 1.6 had. These features will return in the upcoming versions 2.1 and 2.2, in most cases better implemented and more efficient. Also, not all applications which were part of KOffice 1.6 made it into KOffice 2.0. The missing applications will return in 2.1 or possibly 2.2.
