Koramangala (Kannada:ಕೋರಮಂಗಲ) is an area of Bangalore (Bengaluru), the capital city of Karnataka, India. Situated in the south-east of the city,it was not so long ago, a highly sought after residential locality with its wide boulevards and posh bungalows. It now finds itself at the focal point of many busy main roads, notably the Intermediate Ring Road (linking the Airport Road with Hosur Road and Electronics City), Sarjapur Road (leading to the Outer Ring Road, the IT Corridor and beyond) and 80 Feet Road (leading to Viveknagar and MG Road at the center of Bangalore).

Divided into 8 Blocks, the 3rd and 7th Blocks are more commercial than the others, with all major banks and financial institutions including the Axis bank, ICICI bank, HDFC bank and State Bank of India having their branches here.

Koramangala is also home to some prestigious institutions like the St. John's Medical College, Jyoti Nivas College, Vemana Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Astrophysics and others.

Several software companies are located in Koramangala. To mention a few: Infosys, Wipro, NDS, Siemens VDO, Microland, Zenith Software, Rational Software Corporation (India) Pvt. Ltd., Tally Solutions Pvt. Ltd., Tricon Infotech Pvt. Ltd, Robert Bosch, Collabera Solutions, Mindtree, Lucent Technologies, Interra Systems, Tavant Technologies, Ciber and others. Koramangala currently boasts of the The Forum, one of the city's biggest shopping malls, and Raheja Arcade, a big shopping-cum-office complex. A large number of restaurants, relatively upscale houses and apartment complexes and a number of Indian and multi-national software companies distinguish Koramangala from other parts of the city. It hosts luxury apartment complexes like Prestige Acropolis, Raheja Residency and the National Games Housing Complex to name a few.

Koramangala has a number of restaurants, coffee shops, juice and ice cream parlours and pubs, especially around 7th Block.

It is now notorious for its congested roads. The crime rate has increased considerably over the past few years[citation needed]. Though the civic authorities are trying hard to cope with the unprecedented stress of improvising the infrastructure, a lot needs to be done. Its also known for its green parks and play grounds.

History

Up to the 1970s, one would pass the village of Adugodi on the Hosur Road and then usually bypass Koramangala which was on the left while going to the industrial suburbs of Bommanhalli or Bommasandra, about 10 and 20 kilometres away respectively. Settlement was sparse in Koramangala and only towards the late '70s did more houses get constructed. The landmark Mantons factory has now given way to the posh Raheja Arcade commercial complex while the road to Bommanhalli and Bommasandra how houses Electronic City, home to many hi-tech firms including the global software giant Infosys.
