[Short for Swedish kraftpapper : kraft, strength (from Old Swedish krapt) + papper, paper.]
Strong paper made from unbleached wood pulp that is naturally brown but may be dyed another color and is frequently used for large envelopes, paper bags, wrapping papers, and toweling. A lighter grade of kraft paper is used for newspapers and food packaging. Kraft, from a German word meaning sturdy, is inexpensive as well as strong. Kraft paper is sometimes used in direct-mail advertising promotions for the outer envelope. Since the envelope is so inexpensive, the promotion must generate fewer responses to be profitable. Kraft paper is sometimes used to create envelopes that resemble those the government uses to mail tax refunds, in the hope of enticing recipients to open them quickly.
