Krieg, a novel by L. Renn, published in 1928. It tells in direct language the experiences of a front-line infantry soldier from mobilization in 1914 to the return march in November 1918. The sections of the novel are entitled Vormarsch, Stellungskrieg (which has the sub-sections Der Stellungskrieg vor Chailly, Die Sommeschlacht, Verwundet, Die Aisne-Champagneschlacht 1917, Der Stellungskrieg 1917/18, and Die Märzoffensive 1918), and Zusammenbruch. It is told in the first person by Corporal Renn without self-pity or pose. It draws abundantly on the author's experience, but the work, though without plot, is a novel, not an autobiography; the author, for instance, was not an NCO in a line regiment but a regular officer in the Saxon Guards.
