Plot

Screenwriter Toshiyuki Morioka makes his directorial debut with this homage to Akira Kurosawa's first masterwork Drunken Angel. The film opens with a gangster named Isao (Kazushige Aizawa), hospitalized for tuberculosis, covertly checking himself out. He has problems bigger than his TB; he has stash of stolen speed that his former gangland buddies are more than eager to get back. Meanwhile, at an Osaka movie house playing Drunken Angel, a bespectacled salaryman (Shi Suzuki) buys a ticket from the theater manager (Yoshitaka Shioyama). At the theater he encounters not only the manager's sexy young daughter named Mei (Mei Kurokawa), but also a "soap land" professional named Erika (played by former porn star Tomomi Kuribayashi). The movie is interrupted when a band of angry yakuza burst into the theater looking for Isao and the manager, who is Isao's former gangland associate. When the thugs start to rough up Mei and Erika, the salaryman agonizes over whether to play the he-man or to cower in the corner. He opts for the former and gets pummeled. Soon they catch up with Isao as he looks to perform one final act that will redeem him. ~ Jonathan Crow, All Movie Guide
